FunPlus Phoenix beat JDG 2-0 in VCT China Stage 2

FunPlus Phoenix defeated JDG Esports 2-0 in VCT China Stage 2 on July 15. FPX won the map Breeze 13-8 and the map Ascent 13-9. The series contained competitive sections, but JDG never reached a third map.

Setrod produced 40 kills and only 25 deaths across the two maps. He was especially effective on Ascent, where he finished with 22 kills. FPX also received steady work from Colin ‘coconut’ Chung, Xlele, KovaQ and AAAAY. Their support helped the team protect both leads.

JDG chose Breeze but FPX took the map

The veto began with JDG removing the map Summit and FPX removing Haven. JDG then selected Breeze, while FPX chose Ascent. Lotus and Sunset were removed later. Split was not played because the series ended after two maps.

Losing the map it selected placed immediate pressure on JDG in the best-of-three series. JDG then needed to win Ascent, the map selected by FPX. FPX had the opposite advantage. One more map win would finish the match.

Breeze ended before JDG found a late push

FPX won the map Breeze 13-8. The five-round margin meant that JDG could not create a close finish. FPX kept enough control to win the map selected by the opponent. They also avoided a long run of lost rounds that could have changed the mood.

On Breeze, players defend long lines and move across large areas. Poor spacing can therefore create isolated fights. FPX found a better balance between direct duels and nearby support. Their players did not need to chase every opponent. Holding a useful position was often the better choice.

Setrod led FPX on the second map

The map Ascent was closer, but FPX still won 13-9. Setrod recorded 22 kills and 13 deaths. His 316 average combat score was the highest in the server. Those numbers gave FPX an attacking threat and a way to stop JDG when the round became less organised.

The important point is that Setrod’s performance led to the finish. A high kill total can lose value when a team cannot close the last rounds. FPX kept the score moving until they reached 13. They did not allow JDG to extend the series after the gap became manageable.

The wider group situation was introduced in the earlier guide to the VCT China group table. The present report covers a later result between FPX and JDG.

The supporting numbers kept FPX stable

Setrod led the kill count, but the rest of FPX supplied enough help. Chung ended the series with 27 kills and 11 assists. KovaQ added 34 kills and 17 assists, while Xlele recorded 31 kills. AAAAY completed the five and used important agent abilities across both maps.

That spread matters in a two-map win. JDG could not solve the series by avoiding one player. When Setrod did not take the first fight, another FPX member could support the next duel or provide information. The lineup looked more connected than it had during its loss to Nova.

FPX responded to the Nova defeat

FunPlus Phoenix lost 0-2 to Nova Esports on July 12 after beating Trace Esports 2-0 two days earlier. The JDG match therefore asked the team to correct a recent defeat. FPX answered with two map wins and did not need a long comeback.

The result does not erase every problem from the Nova series. It shows that the players could make useful changes within three days. Their next review should keep the decisions that worked on Breeze and Ascent. They must also check whether the same approach fits different opponents. Ending the match in two maps saved energy during a busy stage. FPX also gained more time to study the next opponent. That benefit matters only if the team use the extra preparation well.

JDG suffer a second straight 0-2 loss

JDG entered the match after losing 0-2 to TYLOO on July 10. Another two-map defeat increases the need for a clear review. The team have new links around BerLIN and crownfisher, but Stage 2 results cannot wait for every connection to become perfect.

The 8-13 and 9-13 scores show that JDG competed for rounds. They still failed to control either finish. The coaches should examine what happened after the middle of each map. JDG may need better spending of in-game credits and clearer calls in late rounds. Players may also need positions that let them support a teammate after a duel.

The next matches will test whether FPX can repeat this level

A clean win gives FPX a useful base, not a final answer. TYLOO and EDward Gaming are still on their schedule, and both teams can present different map problems. FPX must show that the JDG result came from repeatable habits rather than one favourable matchup.

Setrod does not need 40 kills in every series if the team keep the same support. Chung can provide information, and KovaQ can connect agent abilities between teammates. Xlele and AAAAY can cover the remaining fights. A balanced five will make FPX harder to prepare for during the rest of Stage 2.
